Jefferies CEO Rich Handler sold $65 million in company stock to buy a luxury yacht. AdvertisementJefferies CEO Rich Handler sold $65 million of his stock in the company to buy himself a gift — a luxury yacht. Handler sold 1.5 million shares, or 7% of his holdings, to purchase a "personal boat and to pay tax obligations," the investment bank said in a Wednesday statement. He has previously sold shares only for tax purposes and charity, the bank said. Investors often view executives' stock sales as a signal about lack of company confidence, so any sales are carefully messaged.

In "Barbie," Allan appears as a kind but lonely man who just wants to hang out with the Kens and Barbies. But in Mattel lore, Allan was actually married to Midge and had two children with the doll, despite him not interacting with her in the movie. A few months later, in early 1964, the toy company began producing a red-haired boyfriend for Midge, Allan Sherwood, named for Handler's son-in-law. "Allan shares wonderful adventures with Barbie and her friends," including going on double dates as Midge's partner with Barbie and Ken, a advert from 1964 proclaimed. Allan was the same size as Ken, meaning that he could share his clothes, as was the case with Barbie and Midge.

The fictional Ruth Handler jokes in Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" about getting in trouble with the IRS. The real-life Handler was indicted for conspiracy and making false financial statements to the SEC. "I am Mattel," Handler, played by Rhea Perlman says in the movie. Under the settlement, around $30 million was paid to shareholders and the Handlers surrended two million Mattel shares. Handler wrote that she was "convinced" that the US Attorney's Office went after her "so aggressively" because of her gender.

Ruth Handler wanted to make an adult fashion doll but Mattel's team shot her downChesnot/Getty ImagesBarbie is back in vogue. The current hype around the brand is in sharp contrast to the rejections Barbie inventor Ruth Handler faced when she first tried to create the doll in the 1950s. But Handler, who had co-created Mattel in 1945, struggled to convince people of the market for an adult fashion doll. Mattel's team told her it wouldn't be possible to make such dolls at a low price in the US, she wrote. "As the years went by, I brought up my idea a few more times, but everybody would kind of turn me off," Handler wrote.

Ruth Handler's children resented the dolls named after them and didn't buy any for their own children. The plastic dolls were actually named after a sister and brother – the children of Mattel cofounder and Barbie creator Ruth Handler. Almost immediately after Barbie hit toy shop shelves in 1959, Mattel started receiving "hundreds of letters from little girls begging us to make a boyfriend for Barbie," Handler wrote. "If people did find out, she'd tell them in no uncertain terms that she was not the Barbie doll." Barbara, meanwhile, said: "I'm tired of being Barbie doll."

Barbie likely wouldn't exist if Mattel's founder hadn't stumbled across Bild Lilli, a plastic doll based on a comic strip. The first Barbie doll, from 1959, had Lilli's red lips, high blonde ponytail, and winged eyeliner. But these dolls had flat chests, big bellies, and squatty legs – they were built like overweight six- or eight-year-olds," Handler wrote. The newspaper began making Lilli dolls in 1955 because of the comic's popularity and to market the newspaper. "Here were the breasts, the small waist, the long, tapered legs I had enthusiastically described for the designers all those years ago," Handler wrote.

The MMA fighter Michael Chandler, pictured with his wife, Brie Willett, bought a $16 million property from Matt Onofrio in 2021. Then, in November 2022, federal prosecutors indicted Onofrio on charges involving three deals he'd arranged in Minnesota the year before. The federal complaint doesn't involve the property Onofrio sold to Chandler. Unbeknownst to Hermann, Onofrio had already tied up the warehouse in contract for $4.75 million. "Matt was finding a deal for $4 million and selling it for $5 million," Stageberg said.

In the 1950s, Ruth Handler, the woman behind Barbie, found it difficult to find support for her idea. After being warned it was a bad idea and that no one would buy it, Barbie was a huge hit. Mattel, Handler's toy company, went on to make billions of dollars off the doll. But she kept selling and remains the most popular doll in the world. In July, the highly-anticipated "Barbie" movie, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie as the titular character, will be released.
JPMorgan Chase kept bags of stones in a warehouse thinking they were nickel. In November 2022, commodities trading giant Trafigura discovered carbon steel and other types of steel and iron instead of the nickel it had ordered. Carbon steel tends to be priced at about 5% of the value of the costlier metal, according to the Financial Times. Nickel prices surged to around $50,000 a metric ton on March 7, 2022 and then to $100,000 a ton a day later, but have come off to around $22,800 a ton ton now. In the complaint, a merchant called Nanni criticized his supplier for sending him low-quality copper ingots and demanded his money back.
Barbie creator Ruth Handler wanted the Ken doll to have a "bulge," she wrote in her autobiography. "Both the all-male design and marketing staffs, however, disagreed, so the groin on the first Ken doll was as smooth as Barbie's." "Ruth felt the design team lacked 'the guts' to give the Ken doll even the suggestion of male sex organs," Gerber wrote. "But Ruth was not political or prone to dwell on the root of cultural standards," Gerber wrote. A range of Barbie dolls for sale during the 2015 National Barbie Doll Collectors Convention.

So was Uruk, Mari and other great cities through history to Tokyo, which is the largest city today. Cities are becoming even more important as we passes through the biggest wave of urbanization in human history. Even the most casual census was unheard of before then, and studies to nail down city populations throughout history weren't even attempted until 1944. The data here is all based on Modelski's numbers, except for London in 1825 which is Chandler's. Jericho and Uruk, the two most ancient cities, are based on estimates made from Modelski's work.
